Assistant Store Manager

Job Location: BORDERS Bookstore (The Curve or Bangsar Village II)

Responsibilities Include :

People Management

  • Setting, maintaining and driving clear performance standards and addressing under performance of staff.
  • Interviewing, hiring and retaining staff of suitable caliber.
  • Promoting staff development through timely evaluations, coaching and training.

Customer Service

  • Ensure that customer service standard are upheld and achieved in a cost-effective manner through productivity initiatives and appropriate staff mix.
  • Perform the role of Service Manager on the designated schedule as assigned.
  • Coordinate all activities to drive, develop and service corporate customers’ sales accounts as assigned.

Asst Managers will be jointly responsible for each of the following areas, although specific responsibilities may be allocated on a rotating basis;


  • Supervision of sales floor and co-ordination of staff activity.
  • Opening & Closing of the store
  • Maintain and promote consistent adherence to loss prevention policies and procedures.
  • Administration support for instance in Point of Sales Reconciliation, Cash Handling, Safe and Float Registers and to record and report discrepancies.
  • Involvement in P&L and budgeting issues.
  • Coordinate purchasing of store/office supplies within store budget parameters.


  • Proactively driving sales throughout the store using knowledge of the market and environment in which operating to maximise all opportunities as they arise.
  • Marketing and promoting individual store sections.


  • Ensure effective and timely management of all receiving and returns processes.
  • Build all product titles (ie. Books, Magazines, Periodicals) through effective range management and presentation.
  • Maintain inventory administration to high audit-compliant standards
  • Evaluate and ensure all supervisors and Section heads perform title performance for replenishment.


  • Other tasks as necessary to support the General Manager in overall store management.

Senior Store Associate / Store Associate

Responsibilities include:

  • Customer Service:
    • Upholding Borders customer service standards.
    • Greet and attend to customer queries, take special orders and answer phone calls.
    • Assist customers in determining which merchandise and services best fit their needs and interest.
    • Attending cash registers and maintaining accountability at point of sales registers to ensure all transactions and receipts are complete accurately.
    • Attending information desks and maintaining knowledge of current sales, promotions and policies regarding payment, exchanges and security practices to provide good assistance to customers.
  • Merchandising:
    • Arrange, shelve and refresh display of merchandise in accordance with store merchandising principles to promote sales.
    • Housekeeping and upholding of the store appearance.
    • Product and title awareness.
  • Inventory:
    • Perform stock maintenance, storage, price tagging and processing of goods received.
    • Assist in stock take, stock replenishment and stock returns.
  • General:
    • Other tasks as necessary to support overall store management.
